PhotoSightseeing

The magic of this region is the result
of an interplay of things. Medieval
fortresses and castles, prehistoric
cultural sites and the Roman settlement
Sebatum bring the old days back to life.
At every step fascinating impressions
you will remember for a lifetime. The
past is angible, culture and tradition
well-preserved.

Sonnenburg, interesting 11th century crypt,
prehistoric findings. Visits are possible every day from 10 AM to 6PM.

Michelsburg, built around the year 1000, strictly linked with the history of St. Lorenzen and the central Pustertal (no visits possible).

CHURCHES:

  • Parish church Hl. Laurentius. This irregular building shows that the church was built in different periods, from the 13th to the 16th century. In the church stands the famous ‘Madonna with the Infant Jesus Holding Grapes’ by Michael Pacher. In the attached Egererkapelle, frescos from the Michael Pacher school.
  • Pilgrimage church in Maria Saalen – built in 1652. The black Mother of God with Infant Jesus is worth a visit.
  • Hl. Margarethskirche in Montal – built in 1483.
  • St. Johann im Spital church in Sonnenburg, original 12th century building with masonry tower. The most important artwork in this little church is the  larger-than-life Romanic Christ (12th century)
  • Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche in Fronwies. The church was built in 1732.

Site of the Roman settlement Sebatum, once spreading from the Schraffl-Bühel vis-à-vis the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche quite far downstream the Rienz on both sides (new digs have been undertaken from time to time). There are remains of residential buildings, storehouses and troop quarters.

Roman milestone in Sonnenburg (on the main road, branching off towards Sonnenburg) of the Emperor M. Opellius Severus Macrinus and his son Diaduminianus.

Antiquarium of the prehistory and early history of St. Lorenzen, located in the town hall of St. Lorenzen. Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 12:30 PM.

Archaeological thematic hike in St. Lorenzen – circuit around the Sonnenburger Kopf mountain, starting from the Hl.-Kreuz (Rienz bridge) or from the Sonnenburg (Lothener Straße turnoff).

Fallen heroes memorial of the war of 1809 in the Klosterwald in St. Lorenzen and the World War I and II military memorial cemetery in Bruneck.

More: Visit of the Mineral collection of Richard Perfler in Fassing/St. Lorenzen, from 15th July every Thursday from 6 PM to 9 PM.
